Equipment List


Having the right gear is an important part of a successful fishing trip. Here is a list of clothing and equipment you should have while fishing at Salmon Lodge.

The weather on Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula is similar to that of the northeastern United States. Summer temperatures vary from 18-30 Celsius (65-85 Fahrenheit). Water temperatures vary from 7-13 C (45-55 F) in the early and late seasons to 13-18 C (55-65 degrees F) during the midsummer months. Plan to bring:

Clothing
  • Warm sweater for cool mornings and evenings
  • Windbreaker or fleece jacket
  • Long- and short-sleeved shirts
  • T-shirts
  • Comfortable pants
  • Warm leggings (for under waders)
  • Your favourite fishing hat
  • Wool or insulated socks to wear inside your waders
  • Rain suit or rain jacket
Boots and waders
  • Neoprene waders for early and late seasons
  • Breathable waders for mid-season
  • Hip waders are handy but not necessary
  • Wading belt
  • Felt-bottomed wading shoes are
    recommended
  • Gravel guards for stocking foot waders
  • Hip boots are handy but not necessary
  • Short rubber boots for getting in and out of boats
  • Running shoes
Rods, Reels and Lines
  • 9 or 91/2-foot fly rods, fast or extra-fast action
  • Spey rods (if preferred)
  • A reel with an adequate drag system capable of holding 150 yards of 20-lb backing
  • Weight forward or shooting tapered fly line
  • Sinking lines: slow and intermediate sink for early- and late-season and high water conditions
  • Leader material from 6 lb. to 15 lb. test. We recommend Maxima Chameleon

There are thousands of Atlantic salmon fly patterns. Those listed above are among the most productive and effective for our rivers. While hook size depends greatly on the water level, we recommend sizes 4 to 12.

For your convenience, we have a small pro shop at the lodge that is well stocked with flies, leader material, fly lines and many other fine fly-fishing products. We also carry a nice selection of top brand fly fishing clothing.

We have a selection of top-name brand breathable waders and boots in various sizes, a choice selection of rods and reels. This equipment is available for rent at the lodge for a nominal fee.
